Taste a little culture right in parkville Hartford! This month at O’Porto Restaurant in Hartford Connecticut, we are celebrating the Algarve region of Southern Portugal with a special regional dish specific to this area.

Did you know that Algarve is actually on of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe? At the peak of its tourist season, Algarve pulls in around 1,000,000 visitors! That’s almost triple their own population!

Here are some interesting facts about OPorto’s featured region – The Algarve:

1- Algarve is one of the few places in Europe that bears an Arabic name. It means simpley, “West”. The real name in Arabic is actually Al Gharb, which English speakers translated into “Algarve”. The way this region got its unique name comes from its rich history which includes influences by the Phoenicians and Moors.

2- Algarve is also one the the earliest regions to be settled in Europe. Again, this regions roots go all the way back the the Phoenecians, thousands of years before Christ.

3- It is one of the biggest tourist traps in the world!  the main attraction of Algarve is its beautiful blue ocean. There is plenty of wildlife, including Flamingos, and even Chameleons. The Mediterranean Chameleon is the only Chameleon that can be found in Europe (outside of a zoo).

A very popular drink for this region is Vinho Verde (Young fresh white wine, made in the north of Portugal but popular in the warm south). Ask you server about our Vinho Verde selection!

Algarve is known for its fresh seafood. On this month’s price-fix menu, O’Porto’s featured dish is Feijoada de Marisco (Beans with seafood).
